Family History South Australia

Did your ancestors arrive in South Australia's early days? Find out by searching our shipping passenger list and marriage databases. Did they head off to the gold fields in the early 1850s and return a little better off? Or perhaps they didn't return and left their families destitute? Find out with the Adelaide Co-op's gold diggers, and persons lost & found databases. Maybe your forebears purchased South Australian land in the 1870s or 80s? These and your other questions may be answered by our free searchable databases, informative articles, and numerous local and worldwide genealogy resources.

about us

The Family History South Australia website (also known as FamilyHistorySA) was launched on 1 January 1996 after its creation, development and testing in late 1995. The aim was, and still is, to provide free resources and data for family history and genealogy research on South Australians and their ancestors at home and abroad. The site is fully accessible to everyone with a recent web browser that has javascript enabled including tablets and mobile smartphones. There are no membership or subscription requirements.

The present domain name, FamilyHistorySA.info, dates from 14 September 2003. The site is also accessible via the .com and .org variants.

In the early years, information comprised:—

Timeline of early South Australian history, now considerably expanded,

South Australian family tree website directory including the Leadbeater family, and

South Australian and other regional genealogy resource directories including local & family history groups.

More recently, several articles have been added, including:—

Accuracy of family history sources, and

Genealogy database design and its genetic basis.

Most importantly, free searchable databases under constant revision and expansion are:—

Early shipping arrivals in South Australia & their passenger lists, together with a directory of other SA shipping and migration resources,

South Australian cemeteries and burials, accompanied by a directory of other SA cemetery resources,

Early SA births, marriages, and deaths including those prior to civil registration, plus a directory of other SA vital records, and most recently,

South Australian pioneer families, a combined database of arrivals, births, marriages, deaths and burials.

A number of our volunteers have contributed information to these databases, especially cemetery memorial inscriptions, headstone photographs and pioneer arrivals. Gratefull thanks to all!
