General SA BMD resources

  • The Government of South Australia Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Office does not make any recent or historical records available for viewing online although certificates can be purchased by mail using a form downloaded from their website, or obtained from a Post Office. Or you can apply personally over the counter at their Adelaide office. All certificate application and progress enquiries must be sent directly to the BDM Registration Office.
  • Use the form below to find the current locations of the original books of duplicate bdm records. These duplicates or microfiche of them are available there for viewing.

The historical birth, death and marriage registration districts were those that existed up to 1992. Many divisions and amalgamations occurred at previous times, mostly 1855-6 and 1928-35 respectively. Numerous boundary changes occurred. When civil registration commenced in mid 1842, there were two districts only, Adelaide and Flinders. At present there is a single district for all of South Australia.

  • FamilyHistorySA's free online historical births (1836-54), marriages (1836-56) and deaths (1836-55) include corrected and expanded details from the latest civil registration indexes including full dates and places plus numerous unregistered events from church baptism, marriage and burial registers. The same data is also available in the Colonial South Australian Pioneers database of combined early arrivals and these vital records.
  • Certificate indexes covering the periods from mid 1842 up to 1928 for births, 1937 for marriages and 1972 for deaths with limited information are available online at Genealogy SA together with newspaper birth (1960+) & death (1972+) notices and a cemetery index. Further information is available for a fee, as is a duplicate certificate transcription service.
