Gazetted Deaths South Australia & NT

1845 to 1941

Georgina Bliss
surname *

Searchable database of more than 5,000 deaths (often referred to as sudden deaths) extracted from police reports in the South Australian Government Gazette in the period 1845-1941. It includes deaths in the Northern Territory up to the end of 1910 when the Commonwealth Government took over NT administration from SA.

The search results may include surname, given name(s), alternate name(s), date and place of death, and date reported. There are numerous records where the surname is recorded as UNKNOWN.

Additional information to be found in the book and CD, available from Gould Genealogy & History, includes cause of death, occupation, age and origin of the deceased. Sometimes the date reported is given, indicating when the police received notice of the death or that the body had been found. Notes include details of circumstances relating to the deceased, some with date of arrival in Australia and names & addresses of relatives. Further information has sometimes been given from BDM registrations, Police Gazettes, newspapers and cemetery records. The list includes some deaths not individually recorded in the gazettes, but which were found to be associated with reported incidents, eg the wreck of the Clan Ranald.

If the death you require is not in this database you may wish to search the early SA deaths database, or the SA birth, marriage & death resources directory, or the SA cemeteries directory for another source.
